Great Britain (1642-43) crown Dav-3764
This specimen was lot 33972 in Heritage sale 3076 (Long Beach, CA, September 2019), where it sold for $504. The catalog description[1] noted, "Great Britain: Charles I Crown ND (1642-1643) VF25 NGC, Truro mint, Rose mm, A bit weakly struck over the king's torso, though the horse remains well-detailed and the flan on the whole appears quite round." While Charles had issued crowns in silver and gold prior to the Civil War, his urgent need for cash led him to open several provisional mints and issue crowns in a large variety of types. This one was struck at Truro, which mint was later removed to Exeter. The last gold crown was part of Charles II's hammered issue of 1660-62, after which the denomination was struck exclusively in silver.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver.
