Great Britain 1642 pound Dav-LS541
This specimen was lot 31206 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2022), where it sold for $31,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "Impressive Pedigreed Shrewsbury Pound, GREAT BRITAIN. Pound, 1642. Shrewsbury Mint. Charles I. PCGS AU-50. Declaration type. Obverse: Charles, holding sword and reins, riding horse trotting left; plumes to right; Reverse: Declaration in two lines between two parallel lines; three plumes above. An impressive and wholesome piece, rather unusual given the large nature of the coin and the expanded chances of being damaged over the ensuing centuries. Evenly handled and pleasingly struck, with an alluring gunmetal gray tone throughout. Fairly RARE when encountered as splendid as is the case here. From the Mark and Lottie Salton Collection. Ex: W. L. Raynes Collection (Glendining - 2/1950). Ex: A. Thellusson Collection (Sotheby's - 10/1931) Lot # 197. Ex: L. E. Bruun Collection (Sotheby's - 5/1925) Lot # 787." This type is rare today but enough were made that Davenport lists five major varieties, of which this is the first ("no ground below horse").
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 118-120 g, 0.925 fine silver, this specimen 119.52 g.
