Stack's Bowers 2025 NYINC sale, lot 33084
SB125-33084r.jpg

This specimen was lot 33084 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2025), where it sold for $1,920. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Shilling, 1642. Oxford Mint; mm: Plume. Charles I. PCGS AU-53. A SCARCE "Declaration" variety, and especially elusive in this admirable About Uncirculated quality, easily taking the top spot in both the PCGS and NGC population reports. The portrait bears the typical flatness seen upon the issue, but little wear is evident and the surfaces gleam with soft luster. From the Richard August Collection." While Charles had issued shillings prior to the Civil War, his urgent need for cash led him to open several provisional mints and issue shillings in a large variety of types. Provisional mints included Oxford (shown here), Truro, Shrewsbury and Exeter.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 6.02 g, 0.925 fine silver.

Catalog reference: S-2971; N-2439, KM 206.
