Great Britain 1642 pound Dav-LS539
The first specimen was lot 31211 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2022), where it sold for $120,000. The catalog description[1] noted, "Extravagant and Well-Defined Declaration Pound from Oxford, GREAT BRITAIN. Pound, 1642. Oxford Mint. Charles I. PCGS AU-53. Declaration type. Obverse: Charles, holding sword and reins, riding horse trotting left; plumes to right, pile of arms below; Reverse: Declaration in two lines between two parallel lines; three plumes above. Featuring deep cabinet toning and virtually no evidence of any actual handling, this impressive and monumental specimen would undoubtedly serve as a capstone piece in any advanced collection devoted to Charles I, the English Civil War, or oversized crowns of the world. The strike is quite impressive given the size as well as the era in which and conditions under which it was issued. Given the staggering RARITY, especially in this state of preservation, it should come as no surprise that this example stands alone as the sole graded for the type at PCGS. From the Mark and Lottie Salton Collection. Ex: V. J. E. Ryan Collection (Glendining - 1/1952) Lot # 1223. Ex: E. H. Wheeler Collection (Sotheby's - 3/1930) Lot # 412. Ex: George Hamilton-Smith Collection (Glendining - 5/1919) Lot # 20." The second specimen was lot 31214 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2022), where it sold for $22,800. The catalog description[1] noted,
"Enticing 'Checkered Exergue' Oxford Pound, GREAT BRITAIN. Pound, 1642. Oxford Mint. Charles I. PCGS EF-40. Declaration type. Obverse: Charles, holding sword and reins, riding horse trotting left; plumes to right, pile of arms below; checkered or cross-hatched exergue; Reverse: Declaration in two lines between two parallel lines; three plumes above. A rather attractive and enticing example of this RARER variant, displaying only a light degree of handling and possessing an even strike. Some minor planchet pits are observed, but entirely consistent for the emission. All together, an excellent opportunity for the advanced collector in the coinage of Charles I. From the Mark and Lottie Salton Collection. Ex: Spink Numismatic Circular (10/1957) Lot # 20618 (@ £80). Ex: Henry Platt Hall Collection (Glendining - 7/1950; purchased en-bloc by Spink)."
This type is rare today but enough were made that Davenport lists five major varieties, of which this is the first ("large horse") and the fourth ("XXXX below exergue").
