Sincona sale 63, lot 1058

This specimen was lot 1058 in Sincona sale 63 (Zürich, June 2020), where it sold for 2,800 CHF (about US$3,509 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Grossbritannien, konigreich, Charles I. 1625-1649. Crown 1642, Shrewsburry Mint. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. Kleiner Schrötlingsfehler am Rand. Überdurchschnittliche Erhaltung. (kingdom of Great Britain, Charles I, 1625-49, crown of 1642, Shrewsbury mint. Very fine-extremely fine, Minor flan flaw on edge, Extraordinary condition.)"

While Charles had issued crowns in silver and gold prior to the Civil War, his urgent need for cash led him to open several provisional mints and issue crowns in a large variety of types.
