Great Britain (1644-45) shilling
This specimen was lot 2697 in Goldberg sale 91 (Los Angeles, June 2016), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Great Britain. Shilling, ND NGC AU50. Charles I, 1625-1649. Tower mint under Parliament. Mint mark, R in brackets (1644-45). Irregular edges, bust softly struck, attractive old toning with lustrous fields. NGC graded AU-50." Charles' conflicts with Parliament and his subsequent inability to raise funds cramped the production of coin. The SCWC lists over fifty different types of shillings for Charles I. By 1644, Charles no longer controlled the Tower Mint and coins were made there under the authority of Parliament. Milled coinage finally superseded the hammered coinage in 1664. However, the old hammered coin was not called in and melted until 1696-97.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 6.02 g, 0.925 fine silver.
