SB622-71116r.jpg

This specimen was lot 71116 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2022), where it sold for $660. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Groat, 1644. Exeter Mint; mm: rose. Charles I. PCGS AU-53. Obverse: Crowned and mantled bust left; IIII (mark of value) to right; Reverse: Garnished coat-of-arms. Featuring the date in the outer legend of the obverse, this gently handled minor charms with a pleasing cabinet tone and retains all details extraordinarily well." While Charles had issued crowns in silver and gold prior to the Civil War, his urgent need for cash led him to open several provisional mints and issue silver coins in a large variety of types.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 2.01 g, 0.925 fine silver.

Catalog reference: S-3088; KM 288; N-2579.
