Stack's Bowers 2022 ANA sale, lot 31195
SB822-31195r.jpg

This specimen was lot 31195 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2022), where it sold for $1,320. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Crown, ND (1643-4). London Mint; mm: (P). Charles I. PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, AU Details. Group D, class 2. Struck under Parliament. Obverse: Crowned and mantled bust right; Reverse: Garnished oval coat-of-arms; crown above. Despite the minor noted cleaning, this charming gold issue remains without much in the way of actual handling and features an interesting period of manufacture, being struck under the auspices of Parliament during the English Civil War. From the Mark and Lottie Salton Collection." By 1643, Charles no longer controlled the Tower Mint and coins were made there under the authority of Parliament. Milled coinage finally superseded the hammered coinage in 1664. However, the old hammered coin was not called in and melted until 1696-97. Friedberg distinguishes this type from Fr-248 by the use of a round shield instead of a square shield but many pre-Civil War issues had round shields.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 2.25 g, 0.917 fine gold, this specimen 2.22 g.

Catalog reference: KM 243, S-2716; Fr-251; N-2185; Brooker-220 (same obv. die).
