H3089-31167r.jpg

This specimen was lot 31167 in Heritage sale 3089 (Dallas, TX, January 2021), where it sold for $19,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "Great Britain. Charles I gold Unite (20 Shillings) 1643 AU53 NGC, Oxford mint, Plume mm. Truly a very handsome rendition of this beloved type from the English Civil War, which while showing some minor irregularities in the dies, still demonstrates a superb craftsmanship and remarkable fullness of expression. Whereas the issue usually comes on heavily wavy flans with an uneven strike, just the mildest flatness occurs in contained patches in the margins, leaving the legends fully legible. A further accenting charcoal tone picks out the features and creates a pleasant visual contrast. Among the upper-tier survivors for this coinage, with the last example we handled, an XF40, bringing $19,200 in our August 2020 Platinum Night sale." Gold unites were struck at Oxford in numerous types (KM 230, 252, 253, 254, 335, 345).

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 9 g, 0.917 fine gold, this specimen 9.01 g.

Catalog reference: Fr-259, KM 254, S-2734, N-2389 (R), Brooker-851 (same dies).
