This coin was minted in Lima, Peru, and is the first date of a type struck 1789-91. This specimen was lot 3494 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $2,185. The catalog description^[1] noted,

"1818 1789 IJ 8 escudos. Lima mint. AU-55 (NGC). Bust of Carlos III to right, CAROL IV in legends around, date below/crowned arms, legends around. Deep yellow with rich orange highlights and excellent lustre, thin scratch atop date, a beautifully toned specimen of this popular transitional type. Very desirable. From the John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942."

The second specimen was lot 3385 in Goldberg sale 59 (Beverly Hills, June 2010), where it did not sell. The catalog description noted, "Peru. 8 Escudos, 1789 IJ (Lima). Charles IV, 1788-1808. Draped idealized bust of Charles III right; name of Charles IV in legend. Reverse: Crowned arms, Order of Golden Fleece around. Bold, virtually full strike, with proof-like fields. The devices, and particularly the portrait, quite lustrous. Very Rare in this grade. One of the finest known. NGC graded AU-58. Ex Millennia, Lot 1167."

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.875 fine gold, .761 troy oz AGW; Eliasberg specimen: 26.95 grams, 37.40 mm diameter, Millenia specimen: 27.03 grams.
