Mexico 1874-Cn MP 8 reales

The first specimen was lot 6242 in Ponterio sale 155 (Baltimore, November 2010), where it sold for $920. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. Culiacan. 8 Reales, 1874-MP. 'Cn' mint mark. Exceptional quality for this scarce date. Attractive toning, nice strike. CHOICE ALMOST UNCIRCULATED." The Culiacan mint struck eight reales 1846-97 and the 1875-C is rather common. This is the date wherein the "C^N" mintmark was introduced and the "C^N" variety is rare. The second specimen was lot 21077 in Heritage sale 61630 (Dallas, February 2024), where it sold for $660. The lot description^[2] noted, "Mexico: Republic 8 Reales 1874 Cn-MP AU50 NGC, Culiacan mint. A very scarce date according to Resplandores and one that can be acquired 'with patience,' seen here nearing an uncirculated preservation." Other mints for 1874 include Chihuahua, Alamos, Durango, Guadalajara, Guanajuato, Hermosillo, Mexico City, Oaxaca, San Luis Potosi and Zacatecas.
