This specimen was lot 1210 in Stack's "Vermuele, Ward & Mexico Maxico" sale (New York, January 2010), where it sold for $1,150. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Republic. 8 Escudos, 1849 C CE. Culiacan. Hand inscribing law book with quill and Liberty Cap. Rv. Bold eagle facing r. with snake in beak. Lustrous light yellow-gold, the surfaces show a few shallow scratches and scuffs as well as a minor planchet lamination that is missing from the right wing of the eagle. Well struck with a decent appearance. About Uncirculated." The Culiacan mint struck eight escudos 1846-70 and is one of the abundant mints for that denomination; most dates are common.
