Heritage sale 3015, lot 25312

This specimen was lot 25312 in Heritage sale 3015 (Long Beach, September 2011), where it sold for $2,300. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic 8 Reales 1852Do-CP, AU with original luster in the legends, cleaned with some small surface marks including an edge ding on the top rim. Very scarce date/mint." The Durango mint was a prolific producer of eight reales in the early years of the Republic but political difficulties reduced its output after 1848. Assayer JMR is also noted for 1852 and, while not common, is considerably more available than this issue. The Durango mint increased its output after 1858 and most of the later issues before its closure in 1895 are common.

Recorded mintage: unknown but rare.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.903 fine silver, .786 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM 377.4.
