Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction, lot 71009
SB626-71009r.jpg

This specimen was lot 71009 in Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2026), where it sold for $512.40. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Kingdom. Ecu, 1790-R. Orleans Mint. Louis XVI. PCGS EF-45. A wholesome example of this SCARCER crown, with pleasing toning across both sides. From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from Franceschi in October 1962 in Brussels for $4)." This écu au buste habillé was struck at the Orléans mint 1775-77, 1780-91. This is a rare date and the Orléans mint is usually a scarce mint; however, the 1783-87 and 1789 are common.

Recorded mintage: 57,937, a better date[2].

Specification: silver, 11 deniers (0.917 fine), 8.3 pieces to the mark (29.488 g), face value 6 livres, 39 mm diameter. Engraved by Benjamin Duvivier; this specimen 29,34 g.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 883, Dr/2 № 616, Dav-1333, Dupl-1708; KM-564.14; Gad-356 (R2).
