Stack's Bowers September 2025 Collectors Choice sale, lot 71051
SB925-71051r.jpg

This specimen was lot 71051 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2025), where it sold for $960. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Constitution. 1/2 Ecu, 1792-N/Year 4. Montpellier Mint. Louis XVI. PCGS VF-35. Second semester. A RARER type, this rather evenly circulated minor presents the king's imposing countenance upon the obverse and a winged genius upon the reverse. From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from Serge Boutin in Paris on 22 November 1966 for $37)." This specimen is one of a type struck 1792-93 during the early stages of the French Revolution before the trial and execution of the king. It is the scarcest of the denominations issued during the "Constitutional" period of 1791-93. Several mints participated in this issue but Paris is the only one not very rare.

Recorded mintage: unknown, a rare date.

Specification: 14.74 g, 0.917 fine silver, 33 mm diameter, lettered edge. Engraved by Augustin Dupré.

Catalog reference: KM-613.3; Gad-43.
