SB925-71024r.jpg

This specimen was lot 71024 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2025), where it sold for $2,880. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Kingdom. Ecu, 1791-BB. Strasbourg Mint. Louis XVI. PCGS AU-53. Not surprisingly standing as the only such example of the type in the PCGS census, this crown is quite RARE, especially in such an advanced state of preservation as is the case here. Pleasingly toned and with some charming brilliance among the fields. From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from Bernard Poindessault in Paris on 21 November 1966 for $153)." The Strasbourg mint struck this type 1775, 1778-79, 1790-91. It is an uncommon mint. The mint survived the Revolution and operated until 1870.

Recorded mintage: 23,000, a scarce date.

Specification: 29.49 g, 0.917 fine silver, 39-40 mm diameter, lettered edge, designed by Benjamin Duvivier.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 883, Dr/2 № 616, Dav-1334, KM-564.4; Gad-356 (R5).
