from the Stack's Bowers 2018 Collector's Choice sale, lot 70477

This specimen was lot 70477 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, May 2018), where it sold for $55. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. 12 Deniers, 1792-A. NGC EF-40 BN. Plain mintmark (no dots), lyre privy mark, year 4. No gem but definitely above average." This twelve deniers, struck in Paris, France, during the early stages of the French Revolution, before the arrest and trial of the king, was meant to supersede the sol of the ancien régime. Many varieties exist (years 3 and 4, lyre, rose, leopard privy marks, various overdates). It was struck at sixteen different mints and is very common in low grade.
