Aureo y Calicó sale 447, lot 1178

This specimen was lot 1178 in Aureo y Calicó sale 447 (Barcelona, March 2025), where it sold for 240 € (about US$314 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "1(651). Felipe IV. ˆ (Madrid). A. 1 real. Fine example. Rare. MBC+ [choice very fine]. Ex Aureo & Calico 07/02/2020, no. 772." This specimen shows the arms of Portugal, which was under Spanish rule until 1640. Altho it shows only part of a "1" in the date, the presence of the initial "A" restricts it to 1651. This design was used at Madrid 1627-28, 1642 and 1651. All are scarce. KM 22.1, also struck in 1651, deleted the escutcheon of Portugal.
