Sedwick Treasure Auction 38, lot 1301
Sedwick 38-1301r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1301 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 38 (Winter Park, FL, November 2025), where it sold for $1,320. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN, Toledo, cob 8 reales, Philip IV, 1651 Y, rare. Very bold full date at 1-3 o'clock outside the full cross, full shield (off-center) with bold full denomination VIII to right inside an equally bold PHILIPVS, some doubling, VF with contrasting natural toning. Along with Madrid (see previous two lots), the Toledo mint ramped up production in the early 1650s to handle melted Potosí silver and increase output in order to offset reduced shipments from Peru. These rare coins are now recognized as historically important to collectors in the Americas." This type was struck at Toledo 1630-35, 1639, 1651-55, 1659-62 for Philip IV of Spain while the Segovia mint was producing milled coinage. There is considerable variation from date to date; the denomination can be "VIII" (shown here) or "8"; both exist for 1651. Cayón mentions assayer CA for 1651, which is not listed in the SCWC.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.46 g, 0.931 fine silver, this specimen 27.05 grams.

Catalog reference: Cayón-6439 ("VIII"), Cal-1679; KM-101 or KM 39.7, Dav-4411.
