Stack's Bowers 2022 ANA sale, lot 34493
SB822-34493r.jpg

This specimen was lot 34493 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2022), where it sold for $1,020. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN. Cob 4 Reales, 1651. Valladolid Mint. Philip IV. NGC [EF]-45. An INCREDIBLY RARE cob minor from this lesser seen mint, the present example features solid originality and enough details to make attribution certain. As such, a great opportunity for the specialist in the series for a specimen that won't likely be rivaled anytime soon." The SCWC reports four reales cobs from Madrid, Burgos, Cuenca, Toledo, Granada, Seville and Valladolid (shown here) as well as machine struck examples from Segovia. The specimen shown here has a badly muddled assayer's initial above the mintmark, we assume it was intended to be a "Y".

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 13.73 g, 0.931 fine silver, this specimen 13.54 g.

Catalog reference: Cayón-unlisted, KM-35.8; Cal-1225.
