Sedwick 38-1304r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1304 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 38 (Winter Park, FL, November 2025), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN, Granada, cob ½ real, Philip IV, (1651) N, very rare. Full monogram with bold G-N below, also full but off-center cross, toned XF+ with light surface corrosion. This is a very rare one-year type, the Granada mint one of several specifically put back into service in 1651 to alleviate silver coinage shortage due to the Potosí mint scandal. The rarity and importance of these mainland cobs are just beginning to become evident in the American market, this specific issue touted in Spain as "two known" even though the reference books give it values in several grades." The Granada mint had been inactive since about 1610. Cayón lists a 1651-G N one, four and eight reales but no half or two reales. The Granada mint was reopened briefly in the 1660's to strike copper eight and 16 maravedis.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 1.71 g, 0.931 fine silver, this specimen 1.19 grams.

Catalog reference: Cayón-unlisted, Cal-544; KM-86.1 or KM 16.1.
