Sedwick 38-1302r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1302 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 38 (Winter Park, FL, November 2025), where it sold for $4,800. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN, Valladolid, cob 8 reales, Philip IV, (1651), assayer not visible (stylized F), very rare. High-grade example (AU) with very light toning and faint luster, flat in the peripheries, with natural edge-split, but with choice full crown and shield and cross-lions-castles that are recognizable by style as Valladolid. The Valladolid mint struck these coins only in 1651 with a distinctive F assayer-mark that looks an E with crossbar extended to left, a direct product of the silver shortage following the Potosí scandal, when several Spanish mints briefly increased output using melted and refined silver. A very rare and desirable peninsular type, seldom encountered and highly prized by advanced collectors." This type was struck at Valladolid in 1651 for Philip IV of Spain while the Segovia mint was producing milled coinage. The Valladolid mint also struck four reales in 1651.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.46 g, 0.931 fine silver, this specimen 24.81 grams.

Catalog reference: Cayón-6441, Cal-1690; KM-134.6 or KM 39.8, Dav-4412.
