Künker sale 403, lot 1453

This specimen was lot 1453 in Künker sale 403 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €2,800 (about US$3,674 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SEDISVAKANZ 1691. Die Münzstätte Rom. Testone 1691, Rom. Die Taube schaut nach l. und dem mit Palmzweigen geschmückten Wappen des Presidente della zecca, Monsieur Ottaviano Corsini, auf der Rückseite. RR Herstellungsbedingte kl. Randunebenheiten, sonst vorzüglich. (Papal States, sede vacante, testone of 1691, Rome mint. Obverse: a dove faces left, the minmaster's arms decorated with palm branches. Very rare, irregular edge as struck, otherwise extremely fine.)"

The testone was three giulii and 3½ testone made a piastra. As usual for a sede vacante issue, the obverse features the camerlengo's arms and the reverse features the dove of the Holy Spirit, bringing wisdom to the cardinals haggling over who would be the next pope. Several varieties exist.
