Papal States 1692 scudo d'oro Fr-176
This specimen was lot 4179 in Goldberg sale 41 (Beverly Hills, May 2007), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Vatican. Scudo d'oro, 1692. Innocent XII (Antonio Pignatelli), 1691-1700. Year 2. Obv: Coat of arms. Leg: INNOC.XII. -.PONT.M.A.II Reverse: Bust of St. Peter right. Leg: .SAN. - PETRVS.APO 1692. NGC graded AU-58. Innocent, differing from many of his predecessors, was a true servant of the church. He fought to abandon the policy of nepotism, whereby previous popes had appointed their relatives to important church posts. In addition he humbly fought for the values and ideals of the early church fathers." This coin is catalogued as a scudo d'oro, a coin about 4% lighter than a ducat.
