Künker sale 403, lot 1463

This specimen was lot 1463 in Künker sale 403 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €1,200 (about US$1,575 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"PAPST INNOCENZ XII., 1691-1700. Die Münzstätte Rom. ½ Piastra A II (1692/1693), Rom. Ecclesia mit Kirchenmodell und Langkreuz auf Wolken. Stempelschneider Pier Paolo Borner. Mit Wappen des Presidente della zecca, Monsieur Maffeo Farsetti, auf der Rückseite. R Winz. Schrötlingsfehler, vorzüglich. (Papal States, Innocent XII, 1691-1700, half piastra of the year 2, Rome mint. obverse: the Mother Church with church model and long cross on clouds; Dies by Pier Paolo Borner. Reverse: arms of the mintmaster, Monsieur Maffeo Farsetti. Rare, small planchet defects, extremely fine.)"

The reverse moto translates as, "Delighteth in the multitude of peace". The reverse figure is usually described as, "The Church seated in clouds," but we think it is actually the pope. The Church is usually depicted bareheaded with flowing hair. The mezza piastra was a seldom used silver denomination and most are scarce to rare.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 16.03 g, 0.917 fine silver, this specimen 16,03 g.

Catalog reference: Muntoni 27; Toffanin 2134/1 (RR), Ber-2234, KM 554.
