county of Montfort in 1810, on its absorption into Wurttemberg

This specimen was lot 29520 in Heritage sale 3037 (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $3,995. The catalog description[1] noted, "Montfort. Ernst Max Josef gold 1/2 Carolin 1735 XF45 NGC. A scarce gold issue from the region of Montfort with the bust of Ernst Max Josef and Mitred, helmeted, and mantled arms. Having been struck with rusty-dies, this coin exhibits fairly porous surfaces, as well as a reverse flan flaw and a somewhat shallow obverse strike--all of which are within the confines of the assigned grade. Even so, a wonderful type that hasn't been seen in the marketplace for quite some time, and rare in its own right." This specimen was offered again in Heritage sale 3049 (Long Beach, CA, September 2016), where it sold for $1,468.75. This type was struck for the County of Montfort in 1732-35 and is accompanied by a quarter carolin and a one carolin. Montfort is an extremely obscure locality on the shore of Lake Constance in Wurttemberg. We have filed it under Austria as the counts sold out to the Austrian emperor in 1780.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 4.85 g, 0.750 fine gold, .116 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: KM 153, Fr-557.
