This specimen was lot 32176 in Heritage sale 3081 (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $19,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "German States: Pfalz - Electoral Pfalz. Karl Philipp gold Carolin 1733 MS62 NGC. A lustrous Mint State survivor whose planchet diagnostics give clear indication as to the specimen's use as the Friedberg plate coin, adding an important history and heritage to what is already an admirable selection unto itself. An elusive type with only few survivors, resulting in a corresponding lack of examples seen by the grading services, this offering currently stands as the lone representative seen by NGC, in uncirculated condition at that, its scintillating fields and light tangerine tone culminating in a considerable visual appeal that could be expected of few others of those that remain." This type, an imitation of a French louis d'or, was issued with several busts in the 1730's. We also note a half carolin (Fr-2030, Fr-2031b) and a quarter carolin (Fr-2031). The emperor banned production of these coins in 1736 by reason of the debased alloy.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 9.70 g, 0.770 fine gold, this specimen 9.64 g.

Catalog reference: KM 253, Fr-2032 (this coin).
