Pfalz 1748-FO 5 thaler Fr-2034
This specimen was lot 2253 in Sincona sale 87 (Zürich, October 2023), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHLAND Pfalz, Kurlinie, Karl Theodor, 1742-1799. Karolin 1748, Mannheim. Mit der Signatur FO (Franz Offner, Münzmeister in Mannheim). Selten. (Germany, electorate of Pfalz, Charles Theodore, 1742-99, carolin of 1748, Mannheim mint with initials "FO". Rare. ANACS 4146617 (VF Details, cleaned))."
We have followed the SCWC and catalogued this as a five thaler (equal to the Prussian friedrichs d'or) rather than a carolin d'or, which was 9.70 g, 0.770 fine gold. Alas, the weight was not reported, which would have settled the matter. The type was struck 1748-50. Charles Theodore became elector of Bavaria on the death of his cousin in 1777.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 6.65 g, 0.900 fine gold.
