Jean Elsen sale 158, lot 1877

This specimen was lot 1877 in Jean Elsen sale 158 (Brussels, March 2024), where it sold for €600 (about US$780 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ALLEMAGNE, PALATINAT-SULZBACH, Karl Theodor (1777-1799), AR 2/3 Taler, 1748 FO, Mannheim. Frappé avec l'argent des mines de Wildberg. D/ B. cuir. à d. R/ Ecu couronné, entouré d'un collier. Rare. Petites griffes. Très Beau à Superbe. (Germany, electorate of the Palatinate, Charles Theodore, 1777-99, silver two-thirds thaler of 1748, Mannheim mint, struck from silver from the Wildberg mines. Obverse: armored bust right; reverse: crowned arms, chain around. Rare, light hairlines, Very Fine - Extremely Fine.)"

Charles Theodore was elector of the Palatinate (from 1742), duke of Julich-Berg and later elector of Bavaria (from 1777). This one year type is scarce. As a gulden, it is conventionally called a two-thirds thaler even tho it weighed less than half a thaler.
