Cologne H3064-30863r.jpg

This specimen was lot 30863 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it sold for $3,120. The catalog description[1] noted, "Cologne. Clemens August gold Carolin 1735-IH XF40 NGC. One-year type. A charming example of this rare issue that shows moderate evidence of circulation, yet remains entirely wholesome, with great color and no major marks. With the exceptional of a clearly superior example that was sold by Kunker in 2013 for 15,000 Euros hammer, this is most pleasing we have seen, with the two other examples in archived auction results displaying significant striking issues. As such, this offering should certainly attract significant attention from the specialist collector." There is also a half carolin (KM 131) and a carolin with a Madonna reverse (KM 133), all rare. The carolin d'or was a gold coin, inspired by the French louis d'or, that was briefly popular in southwest Germany in the 1730's.

Recorded mintage: unknown but scarce.

Specification: 9.7 g, .770 fine gold.

Catalog reference: Fr-835; KM 132.
