This specimen was lot 3542 in Goldberg sale 67 (Los Angeles, January 2012), where it sold for $1,150. The catalog description[1] noted, "German States - Bavaria. 1 Carolin, 1732. Karl Albert, 1726-1744. Draped bust right. Reverse: Madonna and child with arms below. Trace of luster in the devices. NGC graded EF-40." This scarce type is listed for 1726-32. The early eighteenth century saw the appearance of a number of self-titled gold coins ("maximilian d'or," "carolin d'or," "friedrich d'or"), presumably inspired by the French "louis d'or."

Recorded mintage: unknown but rare.

Specification: 9.77 g, .770 fine gold, .240 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Fr-229; KM-408 (was KM 171).
