Wurttemberg 1735-S FB carolin Fr-3589
This specimen was lot 4475 in Sincona sale 4 (Zürich, October 2011) where it sold for 1,300 CHF (about US$1,729 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHLAND Württemberg, 1495 Herzogtum, Karl Alexander, 1733-1737. Karolin 1735. Geharnischtes Brustbild nach rechts. Rv. Wappen auf gekröntem Wappenmantel. Gutes sehr schön. (Germany, Duchy of Württemberg, Charles Alexander, 1733-37, carolin d'or of 1735. Obverse: armored bust to right; reverse: crowned and mantled arms. Good very fine)."
This rare type is one of a series struck in Wurttemberg 1731-36 along with half and quarter carolins d'or. The origin of this denomination is obscure as it fits neither the ducat (3.50 g) nor the louis d'or (8.18 g).
