Wurttemberg 1733 1/4 carolin Fr-3586
This specimen was lot 6141 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €400 (about US$517 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"WÜRTTEMBERG, HERZOGTUM, Eberhard Ludwig, 1693-1733. 1/4 Karolin 1733, Stuttgart. GOLD. Fast sehr schön. (duchy of Wurttemberg, Eberhard Louis, 1693-1733, quarter carolin of 1733, Stuttgart mint. About very fine.)"
The duke of Württemberg introduced the carolin d'or and its half and quarter in 1731. They were quickly imitated by other south German states, including Wurzburg, Pfalz, Hesse and Cologne. An imperial decree of 1736 banned their production by reason of the low fineness of gold. Some lords attempted to surreptitiously issue backdated coinage but eventually production ended. This type was struck 1731-33. Eberhard's successor Karl Alexander continued the denomination until 1736.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 2.42 g, 0.770 fine gold, this specimen 2.39 g.
