Wurttemberg 1735-FB 1/4 carolin Fr-3591
This specimen was lot 1583 in Künker Auction 425 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €700 (about US$991 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHE MÜNZEN UND MEDAILLEN · WÜRTTEMBERG, HERZOGTUM Karl Alexander, 1733-1737. 1/4 Karolin 1735, Stuttgart. GOLD. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. Exemplar der Auktion Heidelberger Münzhandlung Herbert Grün 73, Heidelberg 2017, Nr. 2160. (Germany, duchy of Württemberg, Charles Alexander, 1733-37, quarter carolin of 1735, Stuttgart mint. Very fine to extremely fine.)"
The carolin d'or (Fr-3589), introduced in the 1730's along with the Bavarian maximilian d'or, established the vogue for self-titled gold coins inspired by the French louis d'or. The duke of Württemberg also issued half (Fr-3590) and quarter carolins (shown here, struck 1735-36). Enough have survived that collectively they are the most common Württemberger gold coin of the eighteenth century. An imperial decree of 1736 banned their production by reason of the low fineness of gold.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specifications: 2.42 g, 0.770 fine gold, this specimen 2,39 g.
