Pfalz 1733 carolin Fr-2029
The first specimen was lot 7127 in Ponterio sale 152 (New York, January 2010), where it sold for $2,070. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Pfalz-Sulzbach. Carolin, 1733. Karl Philipp (1710-42). NGC AU-58." The second specimen was lot 4037 in Künker sale 406 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €1,500 (about US$1,968 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"PFALZ, KURFÜRSTENTUM, Karl Philipp, 1716-1742. Karolin 1733, Münzstätte vermutlich Heidelberg. GOLD. (electorate of the Palatinate, Charles Philip, 1716-1742. carolin of 1733, mint probably Heidelberg. Rare in this condition, about extremely fine. Carolins with the year 1733 were originally minted in Heidelberg. However, an imperial letter from 1736 was supposed to stop the issue of these low-fineness coins. On the instructions of the Elector, additional pieces bearing the year 1733 were secretly produced in Mannheim that same year. In addition, the elector of Cologne in Bonn claimed that carolins with this year had also been minted in Düsseldorf. However, the origin of the pieces was concealed. For this reason, the present carolin cannot be clearly assigned to any mint.)"
This type was struck 1733 and 1735; a different type (KM 44) is also known for 1733 with a slenderer bust. The carolin d'or contains the same amount of gold as a French louis d'or of 1726-86; as Pfalz is next door to France, the coincidence should not be surprising. The SCWC has moved this coin from Pfalz-Sulzbach to Kurpfalz. Half carolins and quarter carolins also exist.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 9.7 g, .770 fine gold, .240 troy oz AGW.
