Künker sale 386, lot 6101
county of Montfort in 1810, on its absorption into Wurttemberg

This specimen was lot 6101 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €4,400 (about US$5,686 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"MONTFORT, GRAFSCHAFT, Ernst, 1730-1758. Karolin 1735, Langenargen. GOLD. R Winz. Schrötlingsfehler, sehr schön. (county of Montfort, Ernest, 1730-58, carolin of 1735, Langenargen mint.)"

The duke of Württemberg introduced the carolin d'or and its half and quarter in 1731. They were quickly imitated by other south German states, including Wurzburg, Pfalz, Hesse and Cologne. An imperial decree of 1736 banned their production by reason of the low fineness of gold. Some lords attempted to surreptitiously issue backdated coinage but eventually production ended. This type was struck for the County of Montfort in 1734-36 and is accompanied by a quarter carolin and a half carolin. Montfort is an extremely obscure locality on the shore of Lake Constance in Wurttemberg. We have filed it under Austria as the counts sold out to the Austrian emperor in 1780.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 9.7 g, 0.750 fine gold, this specimen 9.34 g.

Catalog reference: KM 154, Ebner 283; Fr-556 (listed under Austria); Rutishauser 343 b.
