Pfalz 1736 1/2 carolin Fr-2030
This specimen was lot 32896 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it sold for $372. The catalog description[1] noted, "Pfalz-Electoral. Karl Philipp gold 1/2 Carolin 1736 About VF, Mannheim mint. Karl Philip was Elector of the Holy Roman Empire. Noticeable wear, yet problem free." Charles III Philip (b. 1661, d. 1742) was elector of the Palatinate and duke of Julich-Berg. He left no descendants. A distant cousin, Charles Theodore of Pfalz-Sulzbach, inherited the Palatinate and later Bavaria and merged the two domains, only also to die without descendants. During the Napoleonic period, the Palatinate was partitioned, the western part being annexed to France and the eastern part to Baden. This type is noted for 1733 and 1736 and accompanied a quarter carolin (Fr-2031).
