Künker sale 336, lot 6629

This specimen was lot 6629 in Künker sale 336 (Osnabrück, Germany, March 2020), where it sold for €1,400 (about US$1,832 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"WÜRTTEMBERG, HERZOGTUM, Eberhard Ludwig, 1693-1733. 1/4 Karolin 1732, Stuttgart. GOLD. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Germany, duchy of Wurttemberg, Eberhard Louis, 1693-1733, quarter carolin d'or of 1732, Stuttgart mint. Very fine to extremely fine.)"

The carolin d'or, introduced in the 1730's along with the Bavarian maximilian d'or, established the vogue for self-titled gold coins inspired by the French louis d'or. The duke of Württemberg also issued half (Fr-3285) and quarter carolins (shown here, struck 1732-33). Enough have survived that collectively they are the most common Wurttemberger gold coin of the eighteenth century.
