Mexico 1877-Mo M 50 centavos

from the Stack's Bowers sale of the Kirk Menczer Collection, lot 72274

This specimen was lot 72274 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2025), where it sold for $456. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 50 Centavos, 1877-Mo M. Mexico City Mint. NGC AU Details--Cleaned. Only example in NGC Census. Scarce date that rarely appears in higher grades. Sharply struck with attractive toning despite cleaning designation. From the Kirk Menczer Collection of Republican Decimal Minors." The Mexico City mint struck this silver fifty centavos without interruption 1869-88. Many dates are common but this one is better. An 1879/2 overdate is reported and awarded a slight premium.

Recorded mintage: unknown but a better date.

Specification: 13.54 g, 0.903 fine silver, 30.5 mm diameter, reeded edge.
