Mexico 1838-Do RM 1/2 escudo
This specimen was lot 23297 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it sold for $408. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 1/2 Escudo, 1838-DoRM. Durango Mint. PCGS AU-58 Secure Holder. Entirely pleasing for the grade with great color and few marks that catch the eye's attention. The finest example that PCGS has seen of this date and only one finer at NGC. VERY SCARCE, Cataloged by Richard Long as a 'real challenge to collectors' in his book, Gold Coins of the Early Mexican Republic 1823-1873." The Durango mint struck half escudos 1833-38, 1843-55, 1859-64 and is generally considered a common mint tho many dates are rare.
