The first specimen was lot 2848 in Ponterio sale 164 (New York, January 2012), where it sold for $1,035. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 1/4 Real, 1836-Mo. Nice strike, attractive red & brown. UNCIRCULATED." This specimen is the commoner of two types of copper cuartillas known for 1829-37; the large type, is known only for 1829; the small (shown here) was struck 1829-37 and is fairly available. This issue was accompanied by copper octavos; both were issued in an attempt to drive out the abusive minting of state and municipal coppers.
