Mexico 1836-Do RM 8 escudos
This specimen was lot 1216 in Stack's "Vermuele, Ward & Mexico Maxico" sale (New York, January 2010), where it sold for $1,955. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Republic. 8 Escudos, 1836 Do RM/RL. Durango. Hand inscribing law book with quill and Liberty Cap. Rv. Bold eagle facing r. with snake in beak. A well struck coin in bright yellow-gold but scrutiny finds moderate hairlines primarily in the fields. European style eagle and the assayer's initials show traces of the undertype L below the M. Die cracks and a few very shallow planchet fissures on the extreme edge. Choice About Uncirculated." The Durango mint struck eight escudos 1832-70 and is one of the abundant mints tho less so than Culiacan or Guanajuato; many dates are common. The eagle is distinctive to Durango and can be found on all the silver and gold denominations.
