This specimen was lot 1217 in Stack's "Vermuele, Ward & Mexico Maxico" sale (New York, January 2010), where it sold for $2,530. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Republic. 8 Escudos, 1837 Do RM. Durango. Hand inscribing law book with quill and Liberty Cap. Rv. Bold eagle facing r. with snake in beak. Lustrous light yellow-gold surfaces with a solid strike and good eye appeal. One minor planchet lamination lies hidden along the cactus to the left, these are common to this era and mint. Noted to be an extremely rare date and mint in Richard A. Long's reference work. Choice About Uncirculated." The Durango mint struck eight escudos 1832-70 and is one of the abundant mints tho less so than Culiacan or Guanajuato; many dates are common. The eagle is distinctive to Durango and can be found on all the silver and gold denominations.
