Ponterio sale 159, lot 8137

This specimen was lot 8137 in Ponterio sale 159 (Baltimore, March 2011), where it sold for $4,025. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. Guadalajara. 1/2 Real, 1837/6-GaJG. RARE date and exceptional condition. Toned. A superb gem! NGC MS-66." This specimen was struck at the Guadalajara mint in 1837, one of a type struck there 1825-62. Assayer JG is listed for 1837-39, 1842-43 and 1845-62. Even the SCWC notes this date as rare.
