South Peru 1837-Areq M 1/2 real
The specimen shown is a half real struck at the Arequipa mint in 1837 for the short-lived state of South Peru. The type is not common and was issued for two years. This confederation of Peru and Bolivia was broken up in 1839. Two reales, four reales, eight reales, half escudos, escudos and eight escudos are known for this state.
The coin shown was lot 24617 and sold on Apr 16, 2011 for $1,265 at the 2011 April Rosemont Signature World & Ancient Coins CICF Auction #3014 by Heritage Auctions. The catalog description[1] reads: "South Peru 1/2 Real 1837 Arequipa, MS63 NGC, South Peru sunface. Colorfully toned and well struck example of this very popular type. Ex-Freeman Craig (1987). From The Dana Roberts Collection."
