This specimen was lot 11264 in Ponterio sale 169 (Baltimore, November 2012), where it sold for $382. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 4 Reales, 1837-PiJS. Very scarce first year issue. Toned with a few light marks. CHOICE VERY FINE." Assayer JS is recorded for 1827-42; four reales were struck at Potosi 1837-38, 1842-64, 1868-69. Ten mints (Mexico City, Guanajuato, Zacatecas, Potosi, Oaxaca, Hermosillo, Real del Catorce, Guadalupe y Calvo, Guadalajara and Culiacan) struck this type of which Zacatecas is tied with Guanajuato as the commonest mint. This particular date is rare.
