Aureo sale 242, lot 288

This specimen was lot 288 in Aureo y Calicó sale 242 (Barcelona, March 2012), where it sold for 280 € (about US$435 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Fernando VII (1808-1833). 1821. Zacatecas. AZ. 2 reales. Bella. Brillo original. Muy rara así. EBC+. (Ferdinand VII, 1808-33, two reales of 1821, Zacatecas mint. Nice toning, very rare thus, choice extremely fine)."

This specimen is one of a series minted 1812-21 in Zacatecas during the reign of Ferdinand VII. It uses the "standard bust" of Ferdinand. The mounting anarchy unleashed during the Mexican War of Independence forced the royal authorities to open branch mints, such as Zacatecas, Guanajuato and Durango. The date is common. Assayer AZ is recorded for 1821 and 1825-26. The Zacatecas mint, opened in 1811, closed in 1905.
