Aureo sale 238, lot 584

This specimen was lot 584 in Aureo & Calicó sale 238 (Barcelona, November 2011), where it sold for 220 euro (about US$349 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1821. Zacatecas. AZ. 8 reales. Bella. Preciosa pátina. Rara así. EBC-. (Eight reales of 1821, Zacatecas mint. Handsome, nice toning, rare thus, nearly extremely fine.)"

Alarmed by the outbreak of the war of independence, local officials in Mexico opened a mint in Zacatecas so that silver ore would not have to be transported over bandit infested mountain trails. Assayers RG (1820-22) and AZ (1821-26) are both recorded for the date. The 1821ZsRG is the most common eight reales of all of Latin America, suggesting that is was struck for several years with a frozen date.

Recorded mintage: unknown but scarce.

Specification: 27.07 grams, 0.896 fine silver, .780 troy oz ASW.
