Aureo sale 238, lot 579

This specimen was lot 579 in Aureo & Calicó sale 238 (Barcelona, November 2011), where it sold for 340 euro (about US$539 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1821. Zacatecas. RG. 8 reales. La S de la ceca después del ocho. Muy rara. MBC. (Eight reales of 1821, Zacatecas mint, "s" of mintmark is after the "8." Very rare variety, very fine.)"

Alarmed by the outbreak of the Mexican war of independence, local officials opened a mint in Zacatecas so that silver ore would not have to be transported over bandit infested mountain trails. Assayers RG (1820-22) and AZ (1821-26) are both recorded for the date. The 1821ZsRG is the most common eight reales of all of colonial Latin America, suggesting that it was struck for several years with a frozen date.

Recorded mintage: unknown but very common.

Specification: 27.07 grams, 0.896 fine silver, .780 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: Cayón-16054 (error mintmark), Cal. 698 var, Calbetó 1795, KM 111.5.
