Mexico 1820Z 2 reales rev DSLR.jpg

This specimen is one of a series minted 1818-22 in Zacatecas during the reign of Ferdinand VII. It uses a local version of the "standard bust" of Ferdinand. The mounting anarchy unleashed during the War of Independence forced the royal authorities to open branch mints, of which Zacatecas was one of the more prolific. The date is common but the SCWC prices the type at about a third more than the standard Mexico City issue. Assayer AG is recorded for 1814-20. The Zacatecas mint remained open after independence, striking coins for the Republic of Mexico until 1905.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 6.77 g, 0.896 fine silver, .196 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: Cayón-15568, KM 93.4.
